Women seeking abortions would call the current contact, always named “Jane,”
for a referral to an abortion provider. Even- tually, the group's members began
performing the abortions themselves. Jane disbanded in 1973, when the
Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade legalized abortion. It is estimated that
Jane's ap- proximately 100 members performed about 11,000 abortions with- out
any fatalities. Here, a member of Jane, under the pseudonym Laura Kaplan, tells
her story.
